SELECTION opens in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2076, a walled city-state where citizens must either comply with the Department of Preservation’s population-control system or face deportation into the collapsing world outside. After a young man chooses deportation and immediately regrets it, the pilot follows a cross-section of Anchorage citizens summoned for the day’s Selection: Jessup Beckett, a disgraced former insider dragged in by force; Atka Quintero, an Inuit mother worried about leaving her disabled adult son behind; Spencer Pace, a paranoid conspiracy-minded inventor; Rain Coulter, a suicide-clinic worker and graffiti artist; Vincent de la Cruz, a fallen former mayor trying to protect his son; Amanda Butcher, a terrified young mother clinging to faith; Gordon Cook, an aging professor saying what may be his final goodbye; Dina Kazemi, a pharmacist involved in underground pain relief; Alexander Dolan, a brilliant and unsettling chess savant; and Timothy Whitaker, who insists his summons is a clerical mistake.

Their separate morning journeys converge inside the Department of Preservation, where a polished propaganda video frames Selection as a noble civic sacrifice necessary for humanity’s survival. One by one, the ten citizens are called into Room A. As the door slams shut behind them, the episode ends with the group sealed inside, forced to confront the system, each other, and the possibility that one of them may not leave alive.
